James Franklin McIngvale, widely known as Mattress Mack, is a Houston-based entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community icon. Born on February 11, 1951, in Starkville, Mississippi, Mack built his legacy from humble beginnings with just $5,000 and a dream to create the greatest furniture store in America. Founder of Gallery Furniture In the early 1980s, Mack launched Gallery Furniture from tents on the side of the freeway in Houston. His relentless work ethic, personal customer service, and bold advertising helped him grow the business into one of the most successful independent furniture retailers in the country. Today, Gallery Furniture employs over 400 American workers and is a champion of Made in America products. Business Philosophy Mack lives by the motto: “Grateful for everything, entitled to nothing.” He believes in hard work, integrity, and giving back. His stores are known not just for quality furniture, but for being community hubs — places where Houstonians gather, especially in times of crisis. Philanthropy & Community Impact Mattress Mack is celebrated for his acts of generosity, including:
• Opening his stores as shelters during Hurricane Harvey and other disasters.
• Supporting education, veterans, and addiction recovery programs.
• Donating millions to local charities and causes.
• He’s also a vocal advocate for American craftsmanship, emphasizing the importance of high-quality, solid wood furniture made by U.S. artisans.
