Institute for Supply Management® Updates Monthly Economic Indicators’ Branding: ISM® PMI® Reports
TEMPE, Ariz. (September 1, 2025) – Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) announced an updated naming convention and brand identity for its suite of monthly economic indicators. Beginning with the next release cycle, ISM’s market moving reports will be collectively referred to as the ISM® PMI® Reports (formerly Report On Business®), reflecting the central role of the Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®).
“For more than 85 years, ISM’s monthly indexes have helped decision makers interpret the economy and act with confidence,” said Thomas W. Derry, CEO of ISM. “The ISM PMI Reports clarify what our data represent while preserving the rigor, continuity and credibility that markets depend on.”
Under the new brand, each series will retain its scope, methodology and release cadence:
- ISM® Manufacturing PMI® Report
- ISM® Services PMI® Report
The ISM® PMI® Reports continue to be produced by ISM’s Business Survey Committees, composed of supply management professionals across U.S. industries, using the same established diffusion index methodology. The only change is nomenclature, ensuring audiences immediately recognize the reports as PMI based indicators while maintaining full historical continuity for time-series analysis.
“This is an evolution in name, not in substance,” Derry added. “Analysts can expect the same transparency, definitions and data integrity that have made ISM’s monthly readings among the most closely watched indicators of U.S. business conditions.”
Changing (brand and references):
- Collective reference becomes “ISM® PMI® Reports” (replaces “ISM Report On Business®”).
- Individual reports use “ISM® Manufacturing PMI® Report,” and “ISM® Services PMI® Report.”
Unchanged (methodology and access):
- Survey instruments, committee composition, seasonal adjustment practices and release schedules.
- Time series continuity and interpretation thresholds (e.g., 50.0 as the expansion/contraction baseline).
- Public access to releases, tables and historical data via ismworld.org/ism-pmi.
The updated naming will be reflected across ISM channels, data tables, media kits and partner feeds starting with the next scheduled Manufacturing PMI® release on September 2, 2025. Media and data licensees are encouraged to update style guides to reference the suite as the “ISM® PMI® Reports” and the individual reports as listed above. When introducing the reports in copy, use first reference trademarks as shown. Subsequent use when referring to all three reports may be “PMI® Reports.” Subsequent use for each individual report may be “Manufacturing PMI® Report,” or “Services PMI® Report.”
Since their inception in 1931, ISM’s economic indicators have been recognized as among the most trusted and timely measures of U.S. business conditions. The PMI® methodology is built on a robust, diffusion index approach and is grounded in responses from supply management professionals across diverse industries. This long-standing nonpartisan history, combined with transparent processes and consistent application, ensures the validity and integrity of the data, making the ISM® PMI® Reports a cornerstone for analysts, policymakers and business leaders worldwide.
