Definition: To determine the price of each shipment, freight carriers use a measurement based on gross (also known as actual) weight or volumetric (or dimensional) weight. Whichever amount is greater typically becomes the chargeable weight. As a result, it’s not unusual to see more than one weight listed on a bill, or a measurement that is different than the volume provided when the shipment was booked, especially when shipping by air.
