How can hyperscalers balance rapid infrastructure expansion with long-term supply chain resilience?

Perspectives_Nikita Parikh photo.jpgIn an era of scarce silicon and power constraints, hypergrowth without supply chain resilience is difficult to sustain.

Resilience cannot be built at the last minute, especially when exponential compute demand — total amount of processing power, memory and hardware resources necessary to run software, process data or execute workloads — meets physical constraints.

These limitations can range from advanced semiconductor packaging to multiyear power and grid lead times. The supply chain can no longer operate simply as a purchasing function; it needs to be designed alongside the infrastructure architecture itself.

Ways for market leaders to build a strong foundation at scale:

Orchestrate at the source. Relying only on primary contract manufacturers is no longer enough. True resilience requires direct relationships, strategic alignment and long-term capacity commitments further upstream — with foundries, advanced packaging providers, memory manufacturers and other critical suppliers.

Design for availability, not just performance. Resilience starts during design. The sourcing and hardware engineering teams need to work together early to understand supply constraints, qualify alternatives and reduce unnecessary dependencies before designs are finalized. Separating fast-changing compute components from long-lead infrastructure like switchgear, transformers and cooling systems also creates greater deployment flexibility.

Buffer generic upstream assets. Stockpiling finished servers creates significant cost and obsolescence risk. Instead, companies can secure upstream capacity and common components while delaying final configuration and integration until demand and site readiness are clearer.

Synchronize silicon with megawatts. Advanced compute has little value without the power and cooling infrastructure to support it. Hardware delivery schedules need to be synchronized with substation commissioning, utility interconnections, cooling infrastructure and overall site readiness.

Engineer geographic elasticity. Trade volatility and geographic concentration are now ongoing operational risks. Building manufacturing and integration capabilities help provide faster production cycle times.

The most helpful career advice I’ve received: 

“If you’re comfortable, you aren’t growing. Lean into the unknown and thrive in ambiguity.”

In a fast-moving domain like global network infrastructure, technologies, architectures, market constraints and supply chains are constantly evolving. The most consequential problems rarely come with a playbook.

Stepping into ambiguity forces you to learn unfamiliar technologies, challenge assumptions, make decisions with imperfect information, and create clarity where none exists. The biggest career breakthroughs happen when you take on problems nobody fully knows how to solve yet — and turn uncertainty into a path forward.

How I approach change: 

I treat change as an essential requirement for growth rather than an obstacle. When major shifts happen, that initial feeling of unease is normal: It means you’ve reached the edge of what you already know.

The turning point for me was the realization that without change, there is no development. When you accept change as the baseline, fear gets replaced with curiosity and focus. I lean into discomfort on purpose, master the new landscape quickly, and use that continuous learning curve to become a sharper, more adaptable leader.

What I like best about what I do:

What excites me most is the rare combination of planetary scale, frontier technology and high-stakes human connection.

On one side, I get to work on cutting-edge technologies that most of the world haven’t even heard of yet, turning complex blueprints into physical infrastructure that operates at a massive global scale. On the other side, the magic happens through people. I love the art of negotiation, mastering the soft skills required to bridge technical and commercial worlds, and building deep, high-trust relationships across global suppliers and cross-functional internal teams. Knowing that the partnerships forged today directly power technologies that will connect the world tomorrow is what drives me every single day.

A book that has made an impact on my career: 

Peter F. Drucker’s The Effective Executive: The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things Done taught me the difference between being busy and being effective. In infrastructure and supply chain, there is always something urgent concerning supply constraints, technology changes, supplier issues or shifting priorities. It’s easy to spend your entire day reacting to what is in front of you.

Drucker helped me think differently about where I spend my time and energy. Not every problem deserves the same attention. The real value comes from identifying the few decisions that can have an outsized impact, making those decisions well, and staying focused on the long term even when the day-to-day noise gets loud. That idea has stayed with me throughout my career.

Why contributing to the profession is important to me: 

I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned and helping others see the opportunities in this profession. I’ve been fortunate to work at the intersection of technology, infrastructure and strategic sourcing, and I’ve seen how interesting and impactful this career can be. Yet, it’s still a path that many people don’t know much about.

I want to help make that path more visible and accessible. You don’t have to choose between technology and business. You can build a career at the intersection of both. 

Over time, I’ve also come to believe that growing individually is only part of the journey. If some of what I’ve learned can help someone else grow faster, avoid a mistake or see an opportunity they hadn’t considered before, that feels meaningful to me.
