Definition: The name short for their location (the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan), the Soo Locks allow ships to navigate through the St. Mary’s River and travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The four parallel locks — each of which is over 1,000 feet long and 60 feet wide and can accommodate a wide range of vessels — were built in the late 19th century and have become a critical transportation hub for the Great Lakes region.
